Diabetes Q&A

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic condition characterized by the body’s insufficient ability to produce or regulate insulin. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that regulates sugar in your bloodstream.

Treatment varies, depending on the type of diabetes you have:

  • Type 1: an autoimmune condition that usually manifests during childhood; with type 1, your pancreas doesn’t produce any insulin
  • Type 2: a chronic condition that usually affects adults; with type 2, your body doesn’t make or use insulin correctly
  • Gestational diabetes: diabetes that occurs during pregnancy; with this type, hormones from the placenta cause glucose accumulation

Regardless of which type of diabetes you have, Dr. Alvi and the team at Family Medical Wellness Center can help.

What are the signs and symptoms of diabetes?

Diabetes symptoms are influenced by sugar fluctuations in your blood and are usually subtle and vague. You may not know you have diabetes until you get an abnormal result from a lab test.

However, it’s still helpful to be aware of the signs, so you can detect the condition early when it’s easiest to treat. Symptoms of diabetes include:

  • Excessive thirst and urination
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Frequent infections and illness
  • Slow healing time
  • Blurred vision
  • Fatigue
  • Anxiety

If you experience any of these symptoms, reach out to the professionals at Family Medical Wellness Center for help managing your condition.

How is diabetes treated?

Dr. Alvi tailors your treatment based on your particular situation, preferences, age, and the stage of your disease. Your dietary and lifestyle choices play a significant role in your treatment.

Type 1 diabetes

If you have type 1 diabetes, your pancreas doesn’t produce any insulin, so you’ll need to use insulin therapy for the rest of your life. You’ll also need to monitor your blood glucose levels and regulate your eating to keep your blood sugars within a normal range.

Type 2 diabetes

With type 2, you may be able to control your blood sugar levels with diet and exercise alone. Otherwise, you might have to take prescription medication to regulate your insulin and glucose levels.

Gestational diabetes

Most pregnant women can control their blood sugars by changing their dietary choices, monitoring their blood glucose levels, and exercising. If glucose levels remain elevated, you may need to use prescription medication or insulin.

The providers at Family Medical Wellness Center can diagnose and help you manage your diabetes. Call the office or use the convenient online booking tool to meet with Dr. Alvi.
